Back in the late 2010s, Hiatus Kaiyote earned a reputation for being your favorite rapper’s favorite band, appearing as samples in tracks from Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Anderson .Paak, and the Carters, to name a few.
Now, the neo-soul quartet have announced their new album, Love Heart Cheat Code, which arrives June 28 via Brainfeeder Records/Ninja Tune, and shared the new single “Make Friends.” Overtop woozy funk, the song is an ode to the importance of platonic love and uses three different genders — female, male, and nonbinary — throughout the verses to show inclusivity. “I wanted to have representation for just the different examples of people that I love from the women in my life, to the men, to my nonbinary friends,” vocalist Nai Palm shares, “and it was very natural and fun to work on as a formula.
“When I sang the third verse, the ‘them/they’ verse, I actually had to stop,” she continues. “Just realizing that inclusivity is so often denied to some of the people that I love the most, my best besties.”
