The Pink Stones are the very definition of their talent-rich hometown. Led by Hunter Pinkston, the quintet is essentially a pickup band comprised of players from other Athens, Ga., outfits, including former members of the Glands and Drive-By Truckers. Due out June 30 on Normaltown/New West, the Pink Stones’ second LP, You Know Who, was produced by Henry Barbe. Henry is the son of David Barbe, who founded esteemed Athens underdogs Mercyland and produced every DBT album since 2001.
As for Pinkston, he’s former punk devotee who migrated to cosmic country and trucker anthems, plummeting headlong down the rabbit hole after hearing the Lemonheads’ cover of Gram Parsons’ “Brass Buttons.” Premiering today at MAGNET, “Someone You Can’t Move” is the first song Pinkston wrote for You Know Who.
“We’ve been playing it live for about as long as I can remember,” he says. “I wrote it right after we finished the first album as a nod to our producer, Henry Barbe. It’s just a nice country shuffle about the kind of love you just can’t seem to get away from. You think about it, dream about it, and sometimes you drink about it. Neil Golden, the newest member of the Pink Stones, gets a good shine in on this one with the honky-tonk piano.”
