Manuel Göttsching, founder of Ash Ra Tempel, RIPThe guitarist and founder of legendary Krautrock collective Ash Ra Tempel dies at 70.

One of the most influential Krautrock artists, Göttsching was famous for his atmospheric “long and winding solos”, as Spin put in 1998.

Göttsching founded Ash Ra Tempel together with Tangerine Dream’s drummer Klaus Schulze, and bassist Hartmut Enke. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1971. The first incarnation of the band was active before 1976, later reuniting in 2000 for Cornucopea festival, organised by Julian Cope.

A seasoned improvisator, Manuel Göttsching is said to have created techno “by accident”. His solo 1984’s one-hour piece E2-E4 is, according to The Guardian, “as important as any disco, funk or Kraftwerk record”.
