Corona

(Out Now)

Nice Guy continue to stake their claim as one of the UK’s most forward-thinking, forthright and downright fantastic bands with another deep, delightful ditty. Sam Lambeth reviews.

Nice Guy chuckle at half measures…whether it be messages or alcohol. When interviewed previously, the Teeside tykes revealed that their band name is about those guys that seem lovely on the surface but carry a hidden edge.

While it’s not to say they’re referring to the John Wayne Gacys of the world, they’re certainly shining a light on the skeevy, the sanctimonious, the self-aggrandizing.

Previous single Shame denounced those who see violence against women and let it happen, while Fast Food lambasted the swipe-n-wipe culture of modern dating.

This time, like a bass-fuelled Black Mirror, Nice Guy adjust their lens and focus on the world of drinking. Nope, Corona isn’t a state of the nation address about post-Covid life, although knowing Nice Guy, that’s perhaps going to come.

Corona, then, tips its bottle neck to beer and regret. It deals with the despair of a hangover in your 40s – when the headaches and ill feeling last as long as a 1975 album. It is both judgemental and understanding, getting to the root of what causes these destructive outings. It’s informative, engaging and once again carries a powerful message.

Musically, it’s another leap forward for Nice Guy. Beginning with sweeping bass and guitar that brings together New Order and The Cure, it switches from moody gothic pop to something altogether more enlightening.

Nice Guy have made music in 2022 informative and powerful and, with indie supremo Laura Horton on management duties, the year 2023 is going to be even better.
