Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 40-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.
This song, when regarded out of its original context, doesn’t feel entirely whole to me. My point was, that considering it was on our third album, that’s a long time for a woman not to write a love song about a guy.
I picked this illo to go with it because it has the softness of paint augmenting the low-key expression, but it also has a very severe black outline. Integrating these visual elements of soft and hard seems appropriate for a love song by a cultural activist.
