Over the weekend, Post Malonehelped celebrate the 25th anniversary of Pokémon with a special virtual set.
For Pokémon Day 2021, the rapper transformed back into that CGI-animated Pokémon trainer the internet doesn’t know how to feel about. As it turns out, Pokémon and Posty fans have even more things to say about the animation following the Pokémon Day performance.
In case you didn’t know, Pokémon and Post Malone are kind of the perfect match. Not only were they both brought into this world in 1995, but Posty has been a Pokémon fan for years. In fact, he still has a Game Boy Color specifically to play the game.
“I’ve been a fan for such a long time, kind of grew up with it,” Posty told Billboard. “Celebrating 25 years is a big deal, so we decided to do it together.”
So, when Post Malone was announced as the headliner for this year’s Pokémon Day, it all made sense. However, the video teaser confirming his headlining set quickly turned heads. The internet ended up having very mixed opinions about Post Malone turning into an animated Pokémon trainer in the announcement video.
For Pokémon Day on Feb. 27, Post Malone performed a 12-minute set which was unlike anything he has done before. For the special virtual event, the rapper transformed back into that controversial animation where he performed amidst familiar Pokémon including Gyarados, Umbreon and Lugia.
While many were entertained by Post Malone’s Pokémon Day day performance, others still weren’t convinced by the rapper’s animation. In fact, many fans flocked to social media to share their thoughts on the CGI live set.
Animated Post Malone performing for a bunch of Pokémon is a goddamn fever dream wtf. https://t.co/4ILshpexId
The Post Malone concert was weird for sure but I really really liked the way they animated the Pokémon for it you can tell they put a lot of time into it 😌 a pretty sick way to celebrate 25 years in my opinion
An animated Post Malone doing a Hootie and the Blowfish cover while inside a bubble, underwater, while Pokémon swim around him isnt what I was expecting for 2021.
I will say, as great as the Post Malone Pokemon concert was, I do have an issue with how they animated Post himself. Like I don’t know, he looks really offputting with his movements a lot of the time
