Reckless YesRather than slowing down as 2020 draws to a close, Reckless Yes Records have announced a number of new signings and revealed details of an exclusive vinyl, only available via their Membership Scheme.

The Derbyshire based ethical Indie are about to celebrate its 5th anniversary having just had their busiest year to date. They have been growing steadily, and picking up plaudits along the way. Joyzine called them ‘a trusted source of consistently excellent new music’ whilst Cambridge Music Reviews said ‘fast becoming a haven for bold, fun, original and constantly challenging musician’.

Louder Than War haven’t been shy of supporting and highlighting Reckless Yes either, yours truly previously pointing out that they have a knack of ‘successfully picking up more fresh talent than many leading football teams’

During December they highlighted their releases over the last 12 months on Social Media. 2020 was a very busy year for the label putting out a number of strong albums; including Bugeye (LTW Top 50 Album); Grawl!x and Duck together with EP’s and singles from the likes of Eilis Frawley; Nervous Twitch; Liines and Fightmilk.

They also released some of the plans for 2021, including new 8 acts for the roster. Reckless Yes co-founders, Sarah Lay and Pete Darrington gave us some insights into what the new signings will bring…

Bitch HuntBitch Hunt

Sarah; “I absolutely adore the music Bitch Hunt are making – it’s catchy, danceable, witty and powerful. Having them join us ahead of the new music they’ll be releasing next year is a real pleasure and a huge privilege”.

Reckless Yes announce new signings + exclusive singleBreakup Haircut

Pete; “Breakup Haircut create the most joyous lo-fi noise pop racket imaginable. It only took a handful of songs to convince us they were something very special, and that’s rare. Usually we stalk a band for ages before deciding to work with them!”

The Crystal Furs

Pete; “I’m ridiculously excited to be helping bring Portland’s The Crystal Furs to a wider audience. Their music is grin inducing joy from beginning to end. I’ve always had a soft spot for Sarah Records-esque unashamed blissed out indiepop and sixties girl groups like The Ronettes and this adorable trio blend both while giving it a unique twist.

Reckless Yes announce new signings + exclusive singleHannah Rose Kessler

Sarah; “Hannah Rose Kessler is an artist with a singular creative vision, which not only shines through in her music but in her visual work around it. She doesn’t shy away from difficult themes in her writing, and draws on personal experience in a way which resonates more broadly while also echoing some really incredible influences on her sound from PJ Harvey and Patti Smith through to Nine Inch Nails, ’80s pop and dub”

Reckless Yes announce new signings + exclusive singlePaper Birch

Pete; “I feel both excited and privileged to have the opportunity to work with Paper Birch. Not only do we get the sonic genius that is Fergus Lawrie of Urusei Yatsura, but also the incredibly imaginative talents of multi-instrumentalist Dee Sada of so many ridiculously cool projects over the last 10 years, starting with An Experiment On A Bird In The Air Pump and ending with NEUMES”.

Piney GirReckless Yes announce new signings + exclusive single

Pete; “We’re delighted to be working with Piney Gir – she’s been making enchantingly gorgeous indie pop for a good while now and her talent for penning unforgettable melodies is astonishing. I watched her performing a live stream for Balcony Fest during the first lockdown of 2020 and was absolutely hooked in the space of half an hour. It was spellbinding – the perfect tonic for these difficult times.”

The Other Ones

Sarah; “I’m a sucker for soaring emotional power pop over crunch n chime guitars and The Other Ones hit this spot effortlessly. Riot Grrrl raw energy matched with winning charm, the band are bringing a bunch of big punk pop tunes to kick off 2021 the right way.

Reckless Yes announce new signings + exclusive singleth’sheridans

Sarah; “A too-often overlooked band on the DIY and indiepop scene th’sheridans have built quite the catalogue over their more than a decade together. With the knack for writing pan-cultural critiques from their lived experience, and making protest music danceable without diluting any anger, they are a band who should be considered as vital musically and in the messages they deliver. If you haven’t heard them, or of them, brace yourself as we’re about to change that in 2021.”

All things considered I think it’s safe to say that 2021 will be another great year for Reckless Yes. Around 15 releases are planned, which include the new signings as well as Eilis Frawley, Fightmilk and Nervous Twitch, the latter already up for pre-order.

If all this wasn’t enough the Reckless Yes Membership Scheme is proving popular again with fans. Early bird subscriptions are available until 1st March; however anyone signing up for the vinyl option before 31st December will receive a limited edition lathe cut. An exclusive remix of the track Hulk, by GodNo! vs Neil Cooper (Therapy?).

The remix of Hulk (GodNo!’s 2nd release of 2020) sees Neil virtually reuniting with former Cable bandmate (and Reckless Yes co-founder) Pete Darrington. He explains… “We’d hit the first national lockdown when I started the remix, Therapy?’s year of touring had been put on hold. I was in the midst of lockdown psychosis with the walls closing in on me. I was chuffed to have something to get my teeth into and put the remix together in isolation on my laptop”

I can honestly say, the quality of releases from Reckless Yes over the last couple of years has been of the highest level. If you’re unfamiliar with the label then now could be a good time to explore…
