Like many awards shows over the past year, the 27th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards are opting for a virtual event to announce the 2021 winners amid the coronavirus pandemic. With a shortened one-hour ceremony, the SAG Awards air April 4 at 9 p.m. ET on TNT and TBS.
Unlike other awards shows, the SAG Awards are voted on by peers who are part of SAG-AFTRA, a labor union that represents more than 160,000 actors, dancers, DJs, singers, stunt performers and voiceover artists among others.
The annual process begins with the SAG Awards Motion Picture and Television Nominating Committees, which consists of 2,500 randomly drawn active SAG-AFTRA members. Following a review of the submissions, active SAG-AFTRA members are able to vote on the final nominees in 15 categories honoring film and televison.
In addition to the abbreviated and pre-taped virtual ceremony, SAG-AFTRA has also scrapped the Lifetime Achievement Award this year. First awarded in 1962 to comedian Eddie Cantor, the honor predates the annual ceremony, which did not begin until 1995. Over the years, the award has been presented to Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Debbie Reynolds and more.
The blockbuster films are not alone in this record-breaking year as the lateChadwick Boseman has become the first person to be nominated four times in the film categories in one year. The beloved Marvel star has been recognized for his roles in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Da 5 Bloods, earning nominations for his leading role and supporting role respectively. Both movies are also nominated in Outstanding Performance by Cast in a Motion Picture.
Boseman is nominated alongside Riz Ahmed, Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman and Steven Yeun in the leading actor category. Ahmed’s nomination for his role as Ruben Stone in Sound Of Metal—the story of a metal drummer who begins to lose his hearing—marks his second at the SAG Awards.
Additionally, Boseman is also recognized alongside Sacha Baron Cohen, Daniel Kaluuya, Leslie Odom Jr. and Jared Leto in the supporting actor category. The Thirty Seconds To Mars frontman and Oscar–winning actor is nominated for his role as Albert Sparma in the crime thriller The Little Things where he appears opposite Denzel Washington and Rami Malek.
In addition to the film categories, the SAG Awards also honor actors in television. This year, Netflix is up for 15 awards. Both Bill Camp and Anya Taylor-Joy are nominated for their leading roles in The Queen’s Gambit. Ozark, The Crown, Bridgerton, Dead To Me and Cobra Kai are also being recognized across various categories.
Disney+ has also scored a few nominations with Diggs being recognized in Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for his roles as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in Hamilton. The Mandalorian is also up for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series.
This year overall, Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,Minari and The Trial Of The Chicago 7 all tie for the most nominations with three each.
