Montreal’s new dark wave champions, Talleen, clearly have something to say with the release their new single, Economics. It’s a hard-hitting post-punk commentary on capitalism that surely cannot be ignored.

Talleen are a hard-hitting dark wave quintet from Montreal who are starting to make some seriously loud noises on the local music scene. Following the release of their debut album, The Black Sea, in 2018, the band started making waves to record some follow up material in late 2019 along with planning some live shows, but lockdown put paid to that for a while. Now finally Talleen re-emerge with their new self-released single, Economics, and Louder Than War bring you the video premiere.

The ten songs on The Black Sea album proved what serious contenders Talleen are as they start to find their feet. With the power of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the intensity of Killing Joke, the anarchic vocal delivery of The Fall and the heat of Primal Scream at their most incendiary, it was a magnificent statement of intent. New single, Economics, follows very much in the same vein with its driving and powerful bass lines, kaleidoscopic guitar sound and sneering vocal delivery and really takes no prisoners.

The band describe the single as “something of a scathing commentary on late-stage capitalism, and the market’s obsession with profit over people”. With singer Alex Petersen’s lyrics including lines like “And them who have all the gold make all the rules” you know exactly where they are coming from. Drummer Alex Crow added “We wanted to reflect how our society can sometimes be shrouded in mystery and symbolism, money being the driving force behind the illusion”.

The band also includes Alex Brianson on guitars, Mike Rodgers on bass and JC Tellier on synths. Talleen have already supported the likes of Idles, Temples and Viagra Boys and are planning more gigs for early 2022 along with a new EP. With the momentum building already I hope they can make it over to the UK sometime soon. Another band to watch out for.
