The Likelihood, self proclaimed ’sketchy indie band’ release their debut album Right Swipe Generation.

The Plymouth four piece are made up of Tom (Guitar/ Vocals), Daniel (Lead Guitar), Ben Lawer (Bass) and Callum (Drums). Formed in 2018, The Likelihood first came to the attention of Louder Than War when their first single, the albums title track was sent in for airplay at the start of 2022. For a band who said they were ‘just four mates having a laugh and making tunes’ it was a promising start.

Fast forward almost 12 months and the debut album has arrived, recorded over two weekends at PMC (Plymouth Music Collective) a community based project established in 1988 providing affordable rehearsal and recording services for the musicians of Plymouth and surrounding areas. It’s great that there are places like this out there, away from the major cities, for young bands such as The Likelihood to use as they hone their craft and grow.

Coming to that time of year where ‘new releases’ are mainly compilations and the airwaves are full of festive tunes this 13 track album was most welcome. I was already familiar with the singles released Right Swipe Generation; Rush Hour Traffic; Can’t Sit Still and No Time for Money, all of which had seen the band growing in confidence. I wasn’t disappointed.

The band explain, “Right Swipe Generation is as it says on the tin, an album about the youth of today: battered and tattered and torn apart. The songs cover an array of topics which are familiar to almost all of us. Anxiety, paranoia and losing control of one’s self. How things could change in the near future and how some things may always stay the same. The feeling of failing at life and growing up through multiple recessions, cost of living crisis and a pandemic. Leaving you skint, working all the time and wondering what the hell is going on. Right Swipe Generation: loud, abrasive and in your face!”

My personal favourite track on the album is the second, Nothing To Declare. With a killer riff and thunderous drums to begin followed by Tom’s spoken vocals, occasionally verging on venomous. It’s got the kitchen sink thrown at it but it works.

It’s an assured debut with plenty of variety, from catchy hooks to heavy licks. This is a young band whom I am looking forward to hearing more from over the coming years.

The Likelihood’s album release show will be held at The Underground in Plymouth on Saturday 28th January The band have 3 support bands planned and will perform Right Swipe Generation in it’s entirety.
