It’s going on ten years since Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 hit theaters and officially marked the end of the film series we grew up with. Now, Rupert Grint has finally revealed if he is still open to reprising his role as Ron Weasley in future films.
In a recent interview, the new dad weighed in on the odds he would return to the Harry Potter franchise.
2020 has actually been a pretty big year for Harry Potter fans. Tom Felton‘s TikTok takeover and social media presence has truly brought us some wholesome content we needed this year. From reuniting with his on-screen father Jason Issacs to welcoming Grint to Instagram in the most Draco way ever, Potterheads have received plenty of new content this year.
And, of course, we can’t forget the truly iconic Harry Potter reunion that happened in November. Various cast members including Daniel Radcliffe, Bonnie Wright and the Weasley twins James and Oliver Phelps all came together for the reunion we had all been waiting for.
Now, it looks like Grint is giving Harry Potter fans a little bit of hope. During a recent interview with ComicBook, the actor revealed he is still open to reprising his role as Ron Weasley in future films. However, in order for him to sign on for more movies, the time would have to be right.
“I don’t know,” he says. “I mean, never say never, I would never say, ‘Absolutely no.’ It was a huge part of my life and I’m very fond of that character and their stories. So yeah, I mean, I’d be up for it at the right time. I don’t know what capacity that would be, but yeah, we’ll see.”
At this time, there are no public plans to put out more films in the Harry Potter franchise. Currently, filming for the third installment of Fantastic Beasts is underway. However, Fantastic Beasts 3 has been hit with plenty of controversies since production resumed this fall.
Back in November, Warner Bros. asked Johnny Depp to step down from his role as Grindelwald. Shortly after, rumors swirled that Mads Mikkelsen would be replacing Depp, speculation that ended up being true. As it turns out, however, Depp was still paid for Fantastic Beasts 3 despite reportedly filming only one scene.
Along with Mikkelsen, both Jude Law and Eddie Redmayne are starring in the upcoming film. For now, Fantastic Beasts 3 is slated to be released on July 15, 2022 after its November 12, 2021 premiere date was delayed.
As well, we can’t forget about the ongoing controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling. The Harry Potter author has received backlash from fans and colleagues due to her past comments regarding the transgender community. Earlier this year, she liked and followed a number of anti-trans accounts and sentiments including “self-professed transphobe” Magdalen Berns on Twitter.
Then, back in June, she shared an article titled Opinion: Creating a more equal post-COVID-19 world for people who menstruate with a caption mocking the phrase “people who menstruate.” As well, Rowling returned her 2019 Kennedy Human Rights award after Kerry Kennedy denounced the author’s transgender comments.
More recently, her new book Troubled Blood sparked even more controversy due to the main storyline. The book follows a private detective named Cormoran Strike as he investigates a cisgender male serial killer who wears women’s clothing to kill female victims.
Eddie Redmayne has openly distanced himself from Rowling and further clarified his stance on the situation back in September. Additionally, Emma Watson and Grint are among the Harry Potter stars to speak up in support of the trans community in light of Rowling’s comments.
