Tracks Of The Year

Yeah man! A top one to call this year! The diversity was just too much for a top twenty. This is based on subscribers as well as writers and is a true call on what I’ve compiled in year four of doing this shit! The multitude of tracks has been blinding, so love it or hate it this is the ten best tracks that have shat in our ears and come out like diamonds in the full hit of sprawling tunes that spanked our speakers or earphones in the year of THE TUNE!!

10. Dead Sheeran: Midlife In A Small Town.

Hard hitting stuff that resonates on the mental health situation from a master that has graced our pages with his smashing debut album reviewed here by our resident punk mentalist Ged Babey.

9. Gilla Band: Eight Fivers

Fuck me! If a group from Ireland can capture a sound better than Fontaines DC or The Murder Capital better than these fuckers let me know now! These guys capture a sonic blast of fury with equally mental lyrics that capture the whole element of our own Ryan Walker’s equally mentally acid head review here!

8. Steve Lacy: Bad Habit

A cool as fuck take on smooth hip hop that takes away the Kendrick Lamar slice of madness and tones it down with his own cool mark of a slick groove with a smart move of slickness that chills the fuck out! Subscribers choice.

7. The Battery Farm: Wooden Spoon Number

A rampant grunge number full of bass laden funk that kills you on every listen. The Corry brothers have been sent to seek and destroy the music scene with every move, especially with this fucked up number from their exceptional debut album Flies reviewed here. Enjoy!

6. Nihilists: I Am The White Stripes

James Mudriczki (ex Puressence) returns with his new project and it’s a joy to have him back. John Robb says: “Its got all those big sound elements of the Killers or U2 but done in an emotional and powerful way with a soaring melody and a cheeky nod at the White Stripes and is a stunning debut from a new project that should get James his just desserts after being the best-kept secret in Manchester for decades.” He’s not wrong. A sweeping beauty of a tune!

5. The Cides: Black Flag

Voted number one tune by our subscribers it’s a rock n roll stab at the establishment that has no airs or graces. A rebel song for the youth that has the classic punk hallmark of The Clash running through it’s veins…

4. Francis Lung: 2p Machine

What a return from the ex Wu Lyf member. An extraordinary EP of spoken word and melody Short Stories is a collection that hit’s your heart strings. Personally I’d have picked Shadow Shyness yet I had to be fair with the voting numbers. A cracking tale that gives you images of the Blackpool arcades that John Robb probably stalked as a young nipper!

3. Wet Leg: Chaise Longue

A predictable choice. Either love them or hate them they lit up the indie skyline this year. The Isle Of Wight posh girls have that magic blend of ear worm tunes that either mesmerise you or annoy you. Your decision, yet they hit the music scene like an exploding candy bullet.

2. Narcissus: A Time And A Place

A group that have grafted for years and have finally come up with a sparkling debut album reviewed here. This is a stand out track that received the vote from our myriad writers and subscribers. A stunning tune of grandeur with some slick vocals from the voices of Ben Guy and Beckie Fishwick. Majestic…

1. Suede: The Only Way I Can Love You

Possibly the greatest comeback of recent years from the old school of Brit Pop. Ged Babey nailed it with his review of our number one AOTY here. This track has all the hallmarks of Suede. A love song of high magnitude that sends shivers up your spine. Classic songwriting from a band that continue to keep us enthralled.

Agree or disagree, this year has been mental for releases. I’ve struggled to review the stuff thrown at me this time it’s been that heavy. The Covid comedown has had every man / woman and his dog releasing everything they can before we are hit with an apocalypse. That’s how it’s felt to the AF anyway! Comment all you like but this has been the hardest track compilation to deal with and I hope you like it. The sprawling selection you’ll hear this year is the most diverse I’ve witnessed for a while! Seven hours and a hundred plus tracks of the most diverse stuff you won’t hear anywhere else! Enjoy you lucky As Fuckers!

Special thanks to everyone who voted: Gus Ironside, Jon Kean, Neil Crud, Mark Ray, Banjo, Irina Shtreis, Ian Corbridge, Gareth Allen, Nigel Carr, Christopher Lloyd, Iain Key, James Kilkenny, Jazz Hodge, Ryan Walker, our subscribers and anyone I’ve missed.
