Wow – out of nowhere comes this killer song.
Within minutes of me being on TV talking about Nirvana something really exciting happens – a teenage band playing with the same sort of explosive intensity as the genius band appears out of nowhere fully formed and thrillingly helter-skelter, noisenik, impassioned, detonatingly beautiful, thrillingly brilliant surfing on the angst and loud/quiet guitar thing… and they rule.
Stereotyped are from Manchester and are teenagers and are finally the breakthrough heavier rock band that the city has been waiting for.
Just when any music form becomes a music piece with a very definite history and trapped in the past then a pesky bunch of teenagers reinvent it! Grunge is now so entwined in the Nirvana narrative and the subject of books and docs that it would feel like dead form but in the hands of teenage Manc band Stereotyped (check out their Instagram) it’s an explosive thing and their debut single The Only One is dynamic, intense and thrilling.
Meeting at primary school and quickly exploring music, they are still super young and bring that teenage angst to the form. Dynamic songs, emotional intensity, explosive choruses and great tunes were always going to come back one day at the least likely moment. What is more remarkable is that there is a thriving 21st-century grunge scene being spearheaded by Grungepop Recorords who are working hard at getting eh word out armed by enthusiasm and a stable of like-mined souls and great bands (contact Grungepop here)
Stereotyped maybe be out of step with everything but that’s the perfect place to be in pop culture. It helps that they are fucking great. This is the past remoulded as the future and they sound so urgent and thrilling and armed with killer songs that they could well be the soundtrack to a noisy, urgent and intense 2022.

“It’s about someone who’s lost control and is spiralling through depression and can’t come to terms with the anger they’re dealing with.”
And here’s what singer/guitarist Spencer McCall had to say about the track:
”I think The Only One is a mixture of the ‘90s alternative rock sound and a personal influence of mine, My Chemical Romance. Every part of the track is massive from Jacob’s growling rhythm and Keenan’s thumping yet melodic bass. I think it’s a song that would never work without one of us. I think it’s the most unified we are in a song.”
