“When Velocity Girl finally ended its wild ride in 1997, I was still eager to make music. In 1998, I gathered my friends Geoff and Adam.  Together, we went into WGNS studios to record some new songs I had written (as well as a cover Adam was bugging me to do). The songs reflected on Velocity Girl while at the same time looked forward to a hopeful future. As is often the case, life has a way of intervening and the tapes got buried on a shelf for 20+ years. Geoff rediscovered them not too long ago and we were thrilled at how good they still sounded.  We decided the songs should finally see the light of day and now here we are with a proper release, 25 years later.” – Sarah Shannon

Demo 98 is a remarkable collection of previously unreleased songs recorded by Sarah Shannon in the WGNS Studios. For those who may not be familiar with her, Sarah Shannon is known for her involvement with Velocity Girl, a highly popular late eighties/early nineties indie rock band. Following the disbandment of Velocity Girl in 1997, Shannon collaborated with old-time friends Geoff Turner (Gray Matter, Three) and Adam Wade (Jawbox, Shudder To Think) to bring these sessions to life. The unique combination of these eclectic musicians results in a sound that will captivate even the most discerning listeners. Their expertise, creativity, and talent shine through every composition, showcasing exceptional musicianship and songwriting. Shannon’s outstanding vocal performance is highlighted in these orchestrations, creating a harmonious fusion of indie, alternative, grunge, post-punk, art-rock, psych-rock, and power pop.

Each number offers a distinct listening experience while seamlessly working together as a cohesive whole. The album opens with “Wheel In A Wheel,” a perfect track that combines only the finest properties of the nineties alternative rock with delicate touches of grunge and indie. The fuzzy guitar riffs, catchy melodies, and usage of flanger/rotary guitar effects elevate the composition, while Shannon’s exceptional voice enhances every note and beat. “I Want To See The Light” serves as an adequate follow-up of the opening composition with its choppy fuzzy riffs, heavy choruses, and infectious singalongs. This song demonstrates the musicians’ versatility by effortlessly assembling elements of various genres. An added touch of saxophone on this track adds a unique flavor that will satisfy those listeners looking for something more than plain and simple alter-rock music. “Marvel” brings a breath of fresh air with its straightforward blend of indie rock, garage rock, and power pop. Polished and clean chord progressions, outstanding keyboard leads, warm basslines, and energetic drumming take center stage in this engaging mix. Shannon’s high-pitched voice perfectly complements every chord and beat, so this track perfectly exemplifies her vocal range.

“I Don’t Want To See The Light” commences on the other side of this fine piece of plastic with an irresistible blend of the finest sonic ingredients borrowed from alternative and indie rock. This downtempo composition transitions into more energetic segments where the entire band exhibits exceptional musicianship. Shannon effortlessly transitions between low, mid, and high notes, enhancing the overall appeal and entertainment of the song. The thoughtful arrangements and layered instrumentations are also worth noting. The band showcases their interest in psych-rock music with “Learn The Ride.” The half-time rhythmic sequences drive the pace while intricate low-end lines and delicate chord progressions shape the ethereal atmosphere. Shannon maintains calm vocal harmonies, yet her voice carries tremendous power that cannot be overlooked. This composition differs from the remainder of the material, but it somehow fits in this ear-appealing sonic equation. This exceptional recording session concludes with “Gone,” a track that encapsulates classic 90s indie rock and power pop hooks, melodies, and harmonies. It serves as a perfect closure for such incredible material, showcasing Shannon’s vocal versatility. The rest of the band shines through mind-blowing instrumentations that will compel listeners to replay this record over again.

Demo 98 is a treasure trove of perfect, previously unreleased alternative and indie rock songs that deserve your utmost attention. Maybe they were forgotten for so many years, but they still sound fresh, unique, and worth spinning on your turntable over again. Sarah Shannon, Geoff Turner, and Adam Wade proved they’re a dream team capable of assembling catchy indie numbers fully stacked with remarkable orchestrations, clever arrangements, and mesmerizing ambiance. Demo 98 carries so many complementary music genres in these six tracks that there’s no way you’re not going to love them. Without a doubt, these recording sessions are a must-listen for fans of Sarah Shannon, Velocity Girl, and anyone with an appreciation for exceptional music.
