As It Is have released their latest single “IN THREES,” which is inspired by succumbing to defeat and the results it eventually causes. The brand-new track features Set It Off vocalist Cody Carson and JordyPurp.

Coinciding with their new single, the three-piece have also announced their fourth studio album, I WENT TO HELL AND BACK, due out Feb. 4 via Fearless Records.

“IN THREES” lyrically dissects the concept of getting caught up in your own thoughts. Lead vocalist Patty Walters explains the song’s meaning and how the band were able to create the dark overtone.

“‘IN THREES’ was inspired by spending too much time all alone in your head,” Walters says to AltPress. “You start to build an alternate reality, where what’s ‘true’ is twisted and contorted, and after enough time, it becomes reality. It leaves you hurt and spiteful and violent and numb. It’s an intensely dark listen, both lyrically and musically, but it was a total opposition experience to create.”

Carson also emphasizes the track’s overwhelming feeling of defenselessness. He points out how, sonically, the band capture the very real emotion.

“This song has aggression, vulnerability, meaningfulness, genuine pain and acceptance,” Carson says. “It’s the human experience. This song to me is the definition of new alt. The way it begins with the loud bass synth paired with the fire alarm to the octave gliding distorted guitars in the chorus.”

In addition, As It Is’ I WENT TO HELL AND BACK will refine their fusion of pop, punk and rock. The group will also hit the road on their 2022 headline tour with Set It Off.
