Brooklyn-based electronic outfit Pas Musique are set to release their new LP, entitled Amateur Radio. Bursting with six experimental Krautrock-influenced tracks, the bizarrely glitchy and eerie “Ancient Scottish Legend” is an audio-visual trip, unlike anything you’ve ever heard.

Founded by Robert L. Pepper in 1995, Pas Musique emerged as an abstract solo sound project. It has since morphed into a collective that has evolved through numerous variations of experimental, electronic iterations. Today Pas Musique is a four-piece consisting of Jon V Worthley, Michael Durek, Jesse Fairbairn, and Robert Pepper.

Amateur Radio  is mirrored by the same broadcasting term, using the radio frequency spectrum for purposes of non-commercial exchange of messages, wireless experimentation, self-training, private recreation, radio-sport, contesting, and emergency communication.

The tracks are dense and textured, mixing in field recordings captured during that U.S. tour. These cacophonic noises take centre stage in Ancient Scottish Legend, disorienting the listener with cross-frequency, static, and musique concrete. The experimental spirits of Raymond Scott, Bruce Haack and Wendy Carlos come through, as the collective sculpts a sonic landscape as a three-dimensional sort of spirit box. The effect is strange and wonderful, if unusual.

This album was inspired by the collective’s U.S. tour in 2019 and recorded shortly after at Pas Musique headquarters in Brooklyn and mixed by All Real Sound.

Amateur Radio will be available on white vinyl and digitally via NYC-based label Alrealon Musique. Jeanne-Marie Varain, artist and daughter of Jean-Herve Peron of Faust, also collaborates on a cover of It’s a Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl. This Faust cover, developed in 2019 for the ‘KRAUT! Covered’ compilation curated by WFMU’s DJ Scott Williams, is now available for the first time on white vinyl.
