Interview: Radio Aftermath

Chris (vocals/guitar): I still haven’t realised that! But I’ll keep you posted!

When did the first glimpses of your latest release come together?

Chris: Our latest release ‘Cup of Coffee in the Big Time’ started out as demo idea from Rob (Burns, Bassist) a few years ago. When we started work on this EP, it quickly became obvious it should kick things off.

What really inspires your music?

Chris: Musically, just the general state or rock music these days, we need more honest, less overly produced, good rock bands. Lyrically? I generally write about what I’m going through in life there and then, or how I feel and view the world around me. As corny as that might sound!

Can you tell us a bit about the lyrical process for a song? How does it normally work?

Chris: Sometimes I get ideas for lyrics just pop in my head and I’ll jot them down for later use, or we’ll be working on a demo track and melodies and words will pop in my head for the song, I’ll generally just follow that and see where it goes, almost let the song write itself. We’ve written songs and people have asked me what it’s about and I’ve genuinely been at a loss… not realising what I’d written about, then I’ve got to go back and do some analysing to figure it out.

What’s the most rewarding moment in your creative process as a band, and why?

Chris: Just having a finished song, mixed and mastered. You’re happy with the mix, you’re happy with the performance, and it sounds even better than what you imagined in your head. It takes so much time that when it’s finished and you’re happy to let other people listen to it, it feels very rewarding.

Who produces your music, and what are they like to work with? (If you produce the music yourself, what do you love the most about working that way?)

Chris: We’ve worked with a few producers over the time, but we’re currently self-producing our EP. Jack (Craven, Drummer) is doing a bang out job of getting the songs sounding huge and intense. We can’t wait for everyone to hear it.

Can you give us a couple of personal highlights from your live show? Particular memories that stand out to you?

Chris: One that springs to mind was a show we played in Hull last year on tour, we played a venue called The Adelphi. We arrive and the street it’s on is a mess, houses with smashed windows and windows hanging off… the venue itself from the outside looks like it’s been derelict for year. We’re waiting to get let in when suddenly we find ourselves looking after some drunk old man that had passed out in the middle of the street, we call an ambulance and then go on our way. At this point I’m thinking, “where the fuck are we!?” So, my hopes for the show aren’t high, but whatever, let’s see what happens. As the night goes on, the venue just fills up and everyone’s vibing to the bands, we get onstage, and it just pops off! We even had people singing our songs back to us. I was blown away, that night will always hold a special place in my memory for that reason.

What advice would you give to another upcoming band/act?

Chris: Stick at it. No matter what.
