Night Punch, a quintet hailing from the vibrant city of Hamburg, has recently unleashed their highly anticipated debut album, Where Sins Bloom (So Does Death). Following their initial foray with the four-track EP released on Get Lost Tape, the band’s evolution has culminated in this captivating and fierce offering. Comprised of Yannick on drums, Luka handling the bass duties, Paul on synths, David adding backing vocals and rhythm guitar, and Maddes taking the lead as both vocalist and lead guitarist, Night Punch boasts an impressive lineup of musicians who have previously showcased their talents in acts such as Melting Palms, Death Canyons, Haemorrhoids, Brain Traps, Dead Novelettes, and The Dutts.

Where Sins Bloom (So Does Death) kicks listeners directly in the face with explosive fusion of garage rock, hardcore punk, punk rock, and synthwave that defines Night Punch’s unique sound. While their musical style treads the line between old-school hardcore punk, post-punk, and punk rock, drawing inspiration from the eighties US and UK underground scene, the band sets itself apart with its distinct elements of fuzzy chaos and noise. The standout features of the album lie in its fierce, aggressive, fast-paced drumming and the spooky tones emanating from the synthesizers, forming an icy backdrop against which the other instruments can unfold. The chainsaw-sounding guitars deliver more than enough abrasive riffs, but don’t be surprised if you stumble upon some melodies, themes, and leads. Therefore, this material offers more than enough sonic delicacies that will satisfy even the pickiest punk rockers.

What sets apart Night Punch from their peers is their sense for innovation while still retaining that recognizable sound. You’ll notice how these folks implemented some of the finest properties of synthwave, synth-pop, and post-punk while maintaining a healthy old-school garage rock, hardcore punk, and punk rock sonic backdrop. These folks perfectly blend the melodic essence from mellower music genres with sheer aggression, dynamics, and energy borrowed from much heavier music styles. The result is more than surprising, offering the sound rarely heard on the contemporary punk rock scene. The lead vocals are another great feature that decorates and enhances this material on an entirely new level. It possesses a healthy dosage of the studio reverb effect. Therefore, it provides more than enough spookiness, harmony, and power to these tracks.

Night Punch invested so much time and effort in developing the base, structure, and each segment of these songs, so you’ll notice how every track comes with a dosage of complexity. It goes far beyond the plain hardcore punk sound we all get used to, despiting all the heaviness, aggression, speed, and power it borrows from the old-school hardcore scene. As I mentioned before, this band pushes the envelope of innovation to the max, and even the tiniest detail about their debut album exceeds expectations. Therefore, head to It’s Eleven Records Bandcamp page and grab this gem on cassette.
