Still Corners return with new track ‘Crystal Blue’, the third single of their upcoming album Dream Talk, set to release 5th April via Wrecking Light Records.
Crashing over its listener, ‘Crystal Blue’ unearths its gleam with rhythmic repetitions of ocean waves against simplistic lyrics that come together to tell the story of two lovers separated by the sea, dreaming of reuniting one day. Hours go by, day and night, the breeze touches their skin, the waves become their only friends as they wait to meet again under the same moon. A soft drum beat, congas and a solitary marimba patter away as Tessa Murray asks, “Do fishes sleep, in the ocean blue? Do you dream of me like I dream of you?”. A crystal clear guitar solo whisks the listener to the far side of the world as the couple head off to a place they’ve never heard of just to be together again. Through the delicate, disjointed drums and stripped-back sound, ‘Crystal Blue’ generates a surreal experience for listeners and embodies their album title by composing a Brian Eno-esque trance-like state through wispy vocals and silky ethereal instrumentation.
‘Dream Talk’ is the product of multiple locations, including East Sussex, the south of France and Woodstock, New York, which lent itself to its conception. “The songs came together quickly, and being able to write from anywhere kept up our momentum.” says Murray. Still Corners’ drive was also supplied via experimentation. The album’s producer, Greg Hughes, said of the album, “We tried various things like different mics, amps and effects before committing to anything. Everything was mixed analog through our new SSL console, there’s a gleam to the sound.”
Supporting the new single is a new video produced by Beyonce and Paul McCartney video director LucyDyson, who commented:
“Crystal Blue is my fourth music video for Still Corners, and as always, it’s so lovely to get to develop a visual concept for their music, and this song has so many gorgeous elements; it sounds like the sea and a summer breeze, and the peacefulness I feel when snorkelling (is there a more peaceful creature than the seahorse?). So, working with the beautiful 8mm footage they provided me with, and Tessa’s lovely silk shirt as the perfect colour pallet, I created a multifaceted video piece bringing together the elements that the music evokes for me; the gentle sway of a coral reef, mottled Neptune hues, and the mesmerising motions of seagulls hovering to the music carried by the wind.”
Still Corners is the musical project of Tessa Murray and Greg Hughes, and formed shortly after Murray met Hughes by chance at a London train stop in 2009. Over the next (nearly) fifteen years, the band has delivered a steady stream of music that is at once reflective, searching and romantic. Showcasing a unique shimmering desert-noir sound Still Corners have earned global commercial success with such releases as Strange Pleasures (2013) and 2021’s The Last Exit. In support of their upcoming album, Still Corners have announced the Dream Talk Tour which will see them visit the US and Europe. Tour dates begin in the US on 17th April and end in Greece on 31st May (dates and tickets below).
The upcoming single ‘Crystal Blue’ is out now, with the bands 6th studio album ‘Dream Talk’ set for release Friday 5th April 2024 via Wrecking Light Records.
