Petty crimes on the day of elections

Oh what a glorious day

Face it child there is no promise no protection

They just released a bird on a wire

Falsified elections, government upheaval, and social unrest serve as subject fodder for the new track from Izzy and the Black Trees: “Petty Crimes”. The song comes off their upcoming album Revolution Comes In Waves (via Antena Krzyku). When fascism and authoritarianism regimes take hold, what happens as democracy derails?

Izzy and the Black Trees bring raw punk energy with their noisy psych guitar riffs, strong beat and feisty melodies: we hear the likes of Patti Smith, Debbie Harry, and PJ Harvey channeled through the lyrics and delivery of this passionately political number. “Petty Crimes” follows the single “Liberate”, released earlier in June. The band continues this bitter detailing of Poland’s – and Europe’s – tenuous and radicalized political situations.

“While writing the song I was thinking about the political situation in Poland where so-called “petty crimes” are a common way to deceive people, making them think that they have a choice while in reality they don’t,” says Izzy Rekowska, the band’s frontwoman and lyricist. “The current state of democracy in our home country is perceived as flawed; not only by other countries, but also by many young people who do not support the ruling party, or the ways that they treat LGBT+ communities and cut down on abortion rights. It is not right. It is not how a modern society should look like. There is a need for a change, and it has to come soon – otherwise we will be a mere bird on a wire.”

Izabela Izzy Rekowska founded Izzy and the Black Trees in 2018 in Poland, after spending some time in London developing her songwriting skills. The band released “Picasso’s Octopuss”, a bold, psych-fuzz-laden track from the debut album Trust No One, released by the legendary Polish indie label Antena Krzyku in April 2020. The title song of the album was featured by Steve Lamacq on the BBC 6 Music Recommends radio show.

In January 2021 the band released a single called “The Station” featuring an English songwriter living in Poland Kev Fox. Also, around that time, in the middle of the pandemic, Izzy &TBT started to work on their second album inviting Marcin Bors as the producer.

Izzy and the Black Trees’ are also known for their incredible live shows full of feminine, punk, and rock’n’roll energy, and the band has played numerous festivals across Europe.
