San Francisco post-punk outfit Topographies returns with a doubleheader of singles just in time for 11/11: “Tied/Arch.” This is the first release from Topographies since their 2020 debut album Ideal Form, which was one of our picks for album of the month during  2020. The stunning new tracks were recorded with Shaun Durkan of Weekend, and Soft Kill. With strong nods to The Soft Moon, The Cure, and The Psychedelic Furs, this pair of brilliant coldwave compositions, which grapple with existentialism woven like a wistful and hopeful dream, sculpt a haunting psychedelic soundscape with dreamy synths, and poignant lyrics delivered with strong, emotive vocals.

As ethereal as it is rooted in post-punk beats, this release is contemporary, heartwarming, and beautifully produced.

Listen below:

Helmed by singer/songwriter/guitarist Gray Tolhurst (yes, son of The Cure’s Lol Tolhurst), Topographies evolved its sound from shoegaze and dream pop towards a more cohesive post-punk infused project over the course of several EPs and singles. Comprised of Tolhurst, Jérémie Rüest (guitar and synth), and Justin Oronos (bass and synth), the band coalesced in the local San Francisco underground music scene (and, in the case of Oronos, Craigslist).
