Orange County post-punk trio The Grin have unveiled their forlorn new single “Paint A Pretty Face.” The track, which has dark, depressing undertones emerging from rolling drums and hypnotic guitar licks, has shades of new wave, 60s surf, and shoegaze. The echoing lyrics bring to mind early Siouxsie, particularly with the drums. The spooky breakdowns also bring to mind Bauhaus and early Cure.

“Paint A Pretty Face” marks their first single from their upcoming third album of the same name, recorded and mixed by Johnny Bell at Jazzcat Studios. There’s a forlorn element to the track, alluding to something pensive and urgent within the psyche; a lamentation for the modern age.

Listen below:

The Grin, who hail from Huntingdon Beach, CA, started in 2019 with Elijah Beaty, Jackson Wasserman, and Ronnie Dunmore. They’ve experimented with all kinds of sounds, keeping open minds to experimentation and genre integration. The tone, however, has always remained the same. dark, depressing, and angry.

The album Paint A Pretty Face will be taking many inspirations from experimental dark acts such as Echo and The Bunnymen, The Gun Club, The Birthday Party, Bauhaus, and Iceage.
