Some Remain‘s latest 7″ release, featuring “Dead Sound” on the A side and the previously released “Knuckle Sandwich” on the flip side, exemplifies why they’re one of the best bands on the Irish post-punk scene. Hailing from Sligo, this release arrives on a black 45rpm lathe cut that encapsulates the band’s musical energy and diversity. The sonic landscape explored on these two tracks is a thrilling amalgamation of post-punk’s finest qualities, with subtle nods to classic punk rock, art-punk, garage rock, noise rock, and alternative. The guitars take center stage, showcasing a skillful interplay of riffs, chord progressions, leads, themes, and harmonies. The band keeps their sound raw yet intricate, so their ideas and musicianship will satisfy even the pickiest punk rockers.

While the tracks delve into the late seventies and early eighties post-punk aesthetic, there’s an undeniable contemporary flair. Sonic elements and instrumentations from the nineties and noughties interweave into the sonic fabric, simultaneously creating a nostalgic yet modern sound. The guitars, shining brightly in the mix, offer a premium display of musicianship, navigating between chaos and order. The basslines emerge as a powerful force right beneath this sonic landscape, providing necessary heaviness, clarity, and depth. It’s also good to mention that these low-end notes serve as a binding element between guitars and drums, contributing to the overall cohesion of the tracks.

The experienced drummer dictates the groove and tempo with intricate beats, breaks, fills, and percussive acrobatics, resulting in a rhythmic foundation that keeps the other instruments in line and enhances the overall intensity of the music. However, it’s the lead vocalist who truly steals the show. His in-your-face shoutouts and dynamic singing maneuvers expertly traverse low, mid, and high notes, emphasizing every segment and instrumentation. The vocals add a layer of attitude and urgency, elevating the punk ethos of the tracks.

This 7″ vinyl is a must-have for punk rock enthusiasts, with “Dead Sound” embodying a straightforward post-punk sound while “Knuckle Sandwich” leaning more towards the ferocity of raging punk rock. The release, recorded and produced by Some Remain and Felipé Loughran-Ponce from Fused Ion studios in Galway, comes packaged in a clear plastic sleeve with front and back artwork card inserts, enhancing the overall visual and tactile experience for the listener. Some Remain’s Dead Sound/Knuckle Sandwich is a sonic journey that pays homage to post-punk roots while fearlessly charging into new and exciting territories. It’s a must for anyone even remotely into punk rock, so head to Blowtorch Records for more information about ordering.
