Swedish darkwave queen Memoria releases a new single, “Girl,” from her coming second album ‘From The Bones‘. via Novoton Records. Memoria is Tess de la Cour’s solo darkwave/postpunk project. “Girl” is a determined anthem with stirring darkwave roots dedicated to all women who have ever suffered abuse. Shades of powerful women in music such as Siouxsie Sioux and Zola Jesus echo through here in both sound and lyrical content, working as a potent lament against a society that enables predatory and violent behaviors.

“All women know someone who have at some point been subjected to various types of abuse by men,” says de la Cour. “And even if the ‘Me Too’ movement made many women finally dare to come speak up about it, and through it strengthen each other, it is still not over.

Rumbling synths, monotonous drumming and an ominous guitar paired with Tess’s powerful voice build a hypnotic chant for justice. The video, directed by filmmaker Per Norman, depicts de la Cour’s determination and a crowd of protestors who join in the chorus. It’s a visual stunner.
