Here’s another band that has been on my radar for so long, but I never managed to pay them the attention they ultimately deserve. Of course, as soon as the introductory piece started, I realized the terrible mistake I done by putting them aside for so long. The Overjoyed is a powerful Greek melodic punk rock quartet from Athens. Aced Out is their latest full-length album, released in 2019 via Keep It A Secret Records, but the band also has some other recordings in their discography. Aced Out is their second album, and previously they released 32 EP, a debut album Boomdoggle, and singles like Strays On The Leash, Defanged, and #Beach. As you can see, The Overjoyed keep their activities as prolific as possible, and “Aced Out” bursts with sheer experience and exceptional musicianship from scratch to finish.

The album contains ten catchy tracks suitable for anyone interested in punk rock. Melodic punk rock might be a broader term that explains their sound, but there’s more than meets the eye. These guys levitate between skate punk and pop punk but don’t be surprised if you stumble upon some of the finest properties of melodic hardcore, ramonescore, and classic punk rock. The Overjoyed flirt with all the subgenres you could imagine at the moment, but melodic punk rock remains as their primary sonic direction. You can even hear how they were inspired by the Epitaph, Fat Wreck, and Nitro bands that emerged during the nineties, but this band sounds unique by all means. You’ll also notice that the majority of this material bursts with a cheerful, energetic, aggressive ambiance suitable for partying hard. The Overjoyed know what they’re doing, and Aced Out is one of those releases without weak moments.

Perhaps Aced Out is a modern melodic punk rock album, but you’ll notice many sonic maneuvers that resemble the mid to late-nineties sound. The Overjoyed perfectly balance beweeen the eras that defined this particular music genre, and they handle it pretty damn well. Every composition comes with excellent vocal harmonies, back vocals, singalongs, catchy themes, melodies, harmonies, chord progressions, riffs, cleverly assembled basslines, and profoundly dynamic rhythmic sequences. Each band member plays a significant role in this sonic equation, and if you separate each channel on this record, you’ll notice their performances burst with sheer experience. There’s no doubt you’ll immediately fall in love with this record if you’re into melodic punk rock music. Head to Keep It A Secret Records and grab this gem.
