Canada’s Terror Bird goes psychedelic glam in their gorgeous new video for “Brilliant Things,” featuring Subterranean Lovers. “Brilliant Things,” performed by Nicole Hebert (aka Nikki Nevver) on guitar, piano, and vocals, Matty Reed on sax, Leanne Chapman on cello, Benjamin Phillips and Lindsey Michie on guitar, Emily Absalom on violin, and Jordan Koop on drums, brings together a diverse range of instruments and influences. Sounding like a forgotten Lee Hazlewood tune performed by Terri Nunn and Echo & The Bunnymen, this gorgeous song is one you want to put on repeat…loudly.
The DIY video presents a psychedelic visual banquet, transporting viewers into a dreamlike realm. It’s a world where the ordinary becomes extraordinary, filled with haunting glimpses of cemeteries, antique dolls, statues, and masks. Fiery visions and kaleidoscopic montages add to the surreal quality, creating an experience that’s both mesmerizing and unsettling. It’s a feast for the eyes that invites you to lose yourself in its rich tapestry of imagery, a perfect complement to the music’s ethereal tones.

Terror Bird, the brainchild of Nikki Nevver, began as a poetic experiment, a fusion of raw emotion and sound. From its initial soundscape of organs, acoustic guitars, and children’s keyboards, the project matured, embracing the depth of synthesizers. After the dissolution of her all-female punk endeavor, Automatic Fancy, Nevver returned to East Vancouver’s gritty embrace, capturing Terror Bird’s essence on 4-track cassettes.
The underground scene soon took notice, with Terror Bird gaining traction for its distinct lo-fi renditions of tracks by Bronski Beat and Jesus + Mary Chain. Nevver’s wandering spirit and her bond with Vancouver’s raw urban landscape gave Terror Bird an unparalleled edge, eventually birthing the goth punk ensemble, Modern Creatures.
Local DJs in Vancouver championed Terror Bird, making it a regular feature in the city’s underground scene, from after-hours haunts to art gatherings and noise-centric events. Its eccentric dark pop found resonance globally, leading to international record releases and tours spanning Europe and America. Among its notable moments, Terror Bird collaborated with Orville Peck in its formative years and graced stages alongside acts such as TR/ST, Xiu Xiu, Grimes, The Human League, and Future Islands.
