You’re holding out for a dream
Insistent on life meaning something more
You’re chasing lights in the sea
But that ship sails no more

The warm, idyllic spirit of 1980s indie pop and new wave is alive and well with “Divinely Impaired,” the new single from Welsh synth-duo Plastic Estate. With this track, the band dives into the imaginary mémoires of a Sophisti-pop era, resurfacing with a crystal clear modern sound. Their beautiful harmonies take center stage in the track, with pensive guitar work and whimsical, even introspective synth chords. We hear elements of Aztec Camera, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, ABC, and Prefab Sprout in their sound.

Their self-directed straightforward performance video highlights their earnest approach, a symphony in sugarcoating bleak lyrics with beautiful voice.

Hailing from the Welsh capital city of Cardiff, Plastic Estate, comprised of Nicholas James and Stanley Fouracres, is a standout in a small yet superb scene of young post-punk bands. Plastic Estate used the pandemic year to write ten new songs juggling the heritage of lost golden era and the pressing presence of the here and now, sounding classic and contemporary at once.

“Not an easy task,”  says the band. “It is rare to stand in the exact spot where you have a full view of the days behind you and the complete control of the moment you are in.”
