Barcelona undeniably stands out as one of the epicenters of the punk scene in Europe, boasting enigmatic, powerful and distinctive bands that never fail to impress. Catalan streetpunk band Arrest has been around for more than a decade (featuring members of great bands like Totälickers, Antipasma, Crimen de Estado, Peligro!, Cruz, etc.), and Pobre i Perillós is their latest seven-inch EP, released on five different local labels. The new EP comes four years after the release of the band’s debut full-length, Ei!, and if you haven’t heard of them yet, I’d recommend checking out the album as well.

Pobre i Perillós, which translates as “poor and dangerous”, picks up where the previous releases left off, with four new tracks in Catalan that talk about the precarious punk life, house evictions, social inequality, police harassment, and resisting the money-grabbing vultures of the Spanish copyright society. It’s working-class band through and through, with a straightforward streetpunk flair, characterized by anthemic mid-tempo stomps and melodic compositions, complemented by snotty vocals and vibrant chords.

You can hear a lot of classic UK82 influences in Arrest’s music, but there’s also a bit of a goth and post-punk flavor that will appeal to fans of modern Oi! bands with a chorus pedal. Tight drumming propels the songs forward with an unstoppable energy, while the rhythm remains unwavering, never letting up on the pace. Overall, the EP showcases a solid punk sound, carrying a certain rawness and attitude that harks back to the classic sound of The Business and Blitz, with a touch of Barcelona’s own punk tradition. Good stuff.

Fun fact: all members of Arrest were also in a football-themed Oi! band called Stoichkov, named after the legendary Bulgarian player from the ’90s. The band released just one 7-inch in 2013, featuring songs about Barcelona supporters and Leo Messi, who was the club’s top scorer at the time.
