The Galician gods of d-beat rock’n’roll break eight long years of silence (if you don’t count the two seven-inch records released meanwhile) since their last full-length to unleash a new masterpiece of monumental proportions.
Viaje a la Lona features eight bangers that layer new realms of motörcharged rock’n’roll to the anger and intensity of traditional d-beat punk. Of course, there is plenty of the usual Black Panda style that emphasizes the phenomenal rhythm section, blazing solo’s, and a supercharged vocal delivery that is as crust-as-fuck as it is extremely catchy. Their unrelenting lyrics are still sung in Spanish taking the piss out of all the society’s bullshit with a tongue-in-cheek humorous twist, thus keeping things interesting and setting the band apart from all the other ‘Motörhead meets Discharge’ clones out there. Each song is an anthem on its own, from the tight thrash chugging and straightforward riff patterns of the opener “Lord Humungus” to the fist-pumping intensity, tempo changes and gasoline-smelled vibes of “Viaje a la lona” and “Mountain lonas” to the delirium induced punk’n’roll frenzy of “La ley de Murphy”, reminiscent to classics like “Los Surfistas Nazis Deben Morir” and “El Rey de la Carretera”, to the epic five-minute closer “El señor del páramo”. There is no filler on this record, the Black Panda is a fast, dangerous, powerful beast, but also extremely fun and playful.
