Dial »N« For Noize” is the latest full-length release by Deafness By Noise, a longstanding Croatian hardcore band from Samobor. This particular material serves as a proper continuation of “A Long Way Down,” their previous album released via Strength Records. Of course, there’s no chance I will exclude “Roots Baby Roots,” a magnificent vinyl consisting of GBH, Cro-Mags, FEAR, UK Subs, 7 Seconds, Bad Brains, Tankard, and many more covers, which came out in between these two releases in 2018 via PDV Records. The thing with Deafness By Noise is that they age like a fine vine. They sound more eclectic, energetic, heavier, and powerful as the years pass by, and if you compare “Dial »N« For Noize” with their self-titled debut, you’ll realize these folks had quite a journey. Of course, the band thought about the visual appearance, and the striking illustration of a gorilla wearing typical hardcore apparel will blow you away. The band always thinks outside of the box when it comes to visual identity, so that’s the case with this material as well. The high-quality, hefty gatefold carries all the things you need to know about “Dial »N« For Noize.” From the lyric sheet and all the possible and impossible info about the band and the record label to the hilarious bandmembers’ head-in-the-jar photos, you actually get a full package deal where you have a chance to get to know what Deafness By Noise are all about. The transparent blue vinyl record comes like a cherry on top, and although this vinyl variant became quite popular among many hardcore bands over the years, it perfectly suits this material thanks to the combination of the colors they used on the gatefold sleeve.

Soundwise, you can expect their earlier established sound. Their irresistible mixture of good old hardcore, street punk, punk rock, and rock ‘n’ roll will leave you speechless so many times throughout the entire album. As I said before, they age like a vine, but you can also hear how they evolutionized and perfected their style to the max. The songs are more anthemic, melodic, and harmonious, but also entirely aggressive and heavy at the same time. The guitars play a significant role in these continuous levitations between the melodic and aggressive side of the spectrum, by delivering nothing but premium arpeggiated and regular chord progressions, catchy riffs, melodies, harmonies, themes, and leads. Deafness By Noise are known for their profound love for rock ‘n’ roll sound, but they’re not heavily overwhelming their songs with this genre. You’ll notice how the melodic punk rock sound affected their songwriting, but also you’ll get the feel that rock ‘n’ roll vibes are also there. The Oi! and streetpunk elements are also the main ingredient on the particular tracks, with all those magnificent themes and leads lurking around. Both guitar players deliver premium musicianship to the table, so you’ll enjoy their performance from beginning to end.

Of course, “Dial »N« For Noize” wouldn’t sound this good without equally complex, vividly hearable, warm-sounding basslines that offer more than necessary heaviness, clarity, and depth. The bass serves as a binding element between guitars and drums too. The rhythm section propels the entire band with cleverly arranged, well-accentuated, energetic beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics. The experienced drummer provides groove and pace, but also keeps the remainder of the group in line. Still, Krmpa’s recognizable vocal maneuvers and empowering singalongs steal the show here. He once again proves he’s a frontman par excellence who knows how to deliver not only powerful screams and shouts but less abrasive, melodic vocal lines. “Dial »N« For Noize” sounds perfect, with so many highlights along the way, but “Here We Go Again,” “Stike The Match And Blow,” “Zero The Clock,” “Overrun,” “Dial »N« For Noize,” “Plain Vanilla,” “Loud Fast Rulez,” and “Who Cares” are standouts on this magnificent full-length album. Of course, the remainder of the release sounds top-notch too, and Tracy Chapman’s cover of “Talking Bout’ A Revolution” demands your utmost attention too. There are many more reasons why you should grab this hardcore gem for your record collection, but you’ll have to discover it by yourself. Head to PDV Records for more information about ordering.
