Drink Deep is a hardcore band that was founded in Berlin in 2022. Like many other bands from Europe’s melting pots like Amsterdam, London or Berlin, these guys also share different backgrounds and nationalities across continents. Members of Drink Deep have played in bands like Police & Thieves (Washington, DC), No Longer At Ease (Charlotte, North Carolina), Remission (Santiago, Chile), and bassist Marcel still plays in The Fog (Berlin, Germany). I remember seeing some of these bands live and I really loved Remission, so it’s great to see some of their members still playing in other bands.

I’m sure this hardcore bunch all have their own playlists and different influences in hardcore, but Drink Deep’s demo is pretty easy to review, not only because of its short length of only four minutes, but also because of the band’s pretty straightforward musical direction. It consists of four tracks, each about a minute long, that recreate the youthful spirit and fast, melodic “early days of Dischord” sound of bands like Minor Threat, Faith, and Government Issue. Some of the whippy, slightly distorted guitars, as well as the cover artwork of the demo, are also reminiscent of Embrace. The lyrics aren’t anything groundbreaking, but I love the attitude, and I’m especially excited about the third song, “Unlearn”, which deals with toxic masculinity and unlearning sexist thinking and behavior. The last song “Empathy” also has a great message and it’s really nice to hear this short demo ending with a line like “I wanna see more empathy”.

Originally released on cassette in 100 copies by the Berlin label SFR-Hardcore in October 2022, the tapes are now sold out and the band is doing a second pressing in their own DIY way. While the original pressing came with a free newsletter with the band’s lyrics and some cool information, the second pressing is even cooler, being dubbed into random old cassettes from the ’80s, ’90s and ’00s, so the B-sides can get a bit weird. Some excellent attitude from these folks!
