Extreme Decay’s latest release is ominously titled Downfall of a God Complex, and the album is no surprise as the band is one of the longest running and most prominent grindcore acts from Indonesia, but this sickening blast madness is even more extreme in its bold and harsh approach to songwriting and excellent production, showing a big compositional progression from their previous also great album.

Downfall of a God Complex sounds modern and current without making the mistake of so many old grind bands who make their new albums sound too clean and with crystal-clear, boring production (I don’t want to name any examples, but I’m sure some of you grind freaks will think of two particular bands from Scandinavia), stay true to their crusty DIY roots and prove that political grindcore/mincecore is alive and well in all parts of the world, with Indonesian grind, fastcore and especially brutal death and goregrind being one of the most unique, prominent and promising scenes out there. The artwork by renowned artist Rio Krisma (Penahitam) is a post-apocalyptic, dark and surreal piece reminiscent of Beksinski that perfectly captures the brutal nature of the music.

Ravi, guitarist and growler, delivers an onslaught of endless rhythmic cathartic riffs and his best low grind growls yet, while second guitarist and screamer Ruly enhances the sound with perfect high vocals constantly alternating with Ravi’s lows, plus making the guitar sound fuller, with some cool solos and a bit of brutal harmonics. The rhythm section of Eko and Anizar (who also screams, making the album a triple threat of grind vocals!) is tighter than ever with non-stop blast beat annihilation and crunchy bass riffs from Anizar.

All in all, Downfall of a God Complex is an all-round perfect grindcore album that encompasses everything that is unique and distinctive about the genre without sounding repetitive. At the same time, considering their long 25-year history, cult status and discography, they show a powerful advancement of their musicianship, compositionally, technically and lyrically. Released by Poland’s Selfmadegod Records, produced and mixed in Indonesia, you can find and buy their album at the label’s official online store or via the band’s Bandcamp.

You will not regret it if you like bands like Death Toll 80k, Dispepsia, Insect Warfare, Embalming Theatre, Bloody Phoenix, Nashgul, Expurgo, Looking for an Answer, Compulsion to Kill, Tools of the Trade—in other words the best grindcore, mince or crustgrind acts of the last 15-20 years—with Extreme Decay being the highest honourable peer of these bands.
