Year: 2022

Released digitally on February 2nd but getting a vinyl treatment via Pumpkin Records in the beginning of April this year, Ruination is the latest release from Manchester based hardcore punks Fatalist.

“The Sabre” kicks off the record, easing us in with encompassing feedback before the driving beats and scuzzy guitars really get things moving. The snarling vocal delivery of the politicised lyrics “The prophet of snakes sell a vile credence. The litany of tyrants, they sing us to war” made me think I knew exactly what I was in for with this record, not in a bad way, predictability isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you think you’ll like what you’re expecting. It’s when second track “Ruination” starts that those preconceptions are destroyed by dialling back the assault in favour of creating a dark, ambient atmosphere, with gentle guitars and distant vocal cries eventually building to a huge crescendo, reminiscent of some of the more epic post metal bands.

Third track “Disasters” continues to cover new ground with the brooding pace staying somewhat in the sludgy lane but leaning more on hardcore sensibilities. “Ritual Anguish” continues in a similar vein, with the noisy abandon of the sparse riffs taking a back foot to the desperate grunted monologue that leads the number, all the while building to a now welcome section of fast, intense beats and euphoric gang chants, before winding down again for its anguished (sorry) climax.

Penultimate track “I Am Wrought” perhaps touches on every element of Fatalist’s sonic palette, beginning with an extended subdued section before the frenetic hardcore beats kick in, complete with huge call to arms ending. “Nervous System” closes the record, a minute long rager that sees the band go from stompy hardcore to furious d-beat, climaxing with a suitably nasty breakdown to close off the piece.

For whatever reason I was expecting fifteen minutes on non-stop d-beats and feedback and was pleasantly surprised at discovering quite a dynamic, intense and moderately paced record, book-ended with a couple of harcore rippers for good measure. Check this out, you won’t be disappointed.

The record releases April 1st, 2022 on heavyweight lathe-cut vinyl through Pumpkin Records. 50 copies will be available, if they sell out, another run of 50 will go out later. 100 copies maximum.
