Fifth Dawn are embarking on a new chapter, having collected accolades, shared big stages and found audiences around the world, this alternative rock three piece from Sydney are now drawing greater potency from the difficult sides of their history. Their new single Return is thunderous and undeniably emotive as it wields the transformative power of loss.
Inspired by a recurring dream experienced by lyricist and vocalist Samantha Faul, Return addresses how suicide can limit access to closure, saying “When I was thirteen my brother who was seventeen at the time committed suicide. Over the years I’ve had this one recurring dream where I would warp back in time to that particular day. Usually how it goes is I would try my hardest to change the course of events which led to his passing and ultimately fail.”. While this is Samantha’s direct experience, she knows clearly that we all have parts of our own history that we are tormented by, whether it be a decision we wish we made or a passed up opportunity.
Return finds its release at the rise of Fifth Dawn’s new sense of self, having been a finalist in Triple J’s Unearthed High competition in 2015 through touring with the likes of Hands Like Houses and Colombus while managing shifting band members and COVID’s crush of industry in recent times. The three-piece as it stands now appreciate their fanbase for not only sticking by
them but sharing and expanding their presence, the organic online growth being a key factor for ensuring that they settle, recalibrate and return with music that encompasses their resolve and is an all-consuming experience for their increasing fanbase.
The accompanying video for Return is a powerful visual, with the band looking and sounding as heavy and compelling as the theme, Samantha’s commanding performance unmistakably signalling that how we learn to live with loss can be a powerful undertaking.
Formed in 2014 by Ethan Pye, Mark Robertson, Jamie Panucci and Samantha Faul, Fifth Dawn have readily and steadily garnered attention for their skill and perseverance as Australia’s pre-eminent producers of female-lead alternative rock.
After uploading their debut single ‘Turbulence’ to Triple J Unearthed In 2015, Fifth Dawn went on to be Triple J Unearthed High Finalists. Their debut single ‘Turbulence’ sold more than 5000 copies in the second half of 2015 after making its radio debut on Triple J. The band was offered opening slots for Hands Like Houses, Columbus and Far Away Stables playing successful shows in Melbourne and Sydney. Their debut EP ‘The Horizon’ generated over 500,000 plays on Spotify.
The band remained in hiatus throughout 2016 – 2017, as they managed band member’s differing commitments, until vocalist Samantha Faul returned reinvigorated. Shortly after an album was in the works and in the second half of 2017 their debut album ‘Duality’ was recorded wholly out of a garage studio located in Western Sydney with the help of Mark Harris (The Ocean The Sky, Buried In Verona) who produced the album and saw a collaboration of production works between Mark with additional mixing and mastering by Henrik Udd (Bring Me The Horizon, Architects) in Sweden. The album consists of 10 dynamic alternative tracks that have re-enforced Fifth Dawn’s signature sound with a heavy framework and the soaring chorus’ that vocalist Samantha Faul is renowned for.

‘Duality’ was released to a strong online fanbase in April 2018, the digitally native sensibilities of Fifth Dawn’s followers meant that the band have been encouraged to focus on new music as COVID crushed live music. Happy Mag being right that “Fifth Dawn’s Duality is an album that will stick in your head long after it’s finished playing.” because while the band retreated to the studio their fanbase has continued to grow organically, amassing millions of streams and expanding from out of Sydney to Germany, UK, Brazil, Japan, Spain, Mexico and the US.
Come 2022 and Fifth Dawn are ready to give back to their fans, with an album slated for 2023 – Working again with Henrik Udd, their first single ‘Return’ is a mature song that reveals the band at their strongest yet: thunderous and undeniably emotive; the all consuming resurgence of Fifth Dawn. Return was welcomed with great enthusiasm, being premiered by online tastemaker Dreambound, and securing spots in Spotify’s Rock Out and New Metal playlists.
