The metal and punk scenes have always been connected in one way or the other, as we can see from the albums that people on each side deeply loved, the shows they were on,  the musicians that inspired them, the stages they shared or even in the shirts and patches they wore, but sometimes, as seen in their ever growing history, they can feel somewhat apart, as if they were two completely separate worlds despite all the connections they had. I even remember some stupid quarrels from when I was younger were groups of punks and metalheads fighted over the most banal shit. But in the last few years, at least from what I experienced in the Santiago scene and have seen from afar in other places, I’ve been glad to see more shows where both gather around, mixing their passion and love for what they do. As it should be, I think, as both are kindred spirits born to go through their paths hand in hand.

In that regard, there’s an album that I’ve been wanting to listen to for a while, but I couldn’t sit down and do so properly until now. And If you’re a fan of high speed punk and metal, soon you’ll be eager to do so too. I’m talking about the new release by Chilean thrashing beasts Insecurity, a band that I actually first heard of through a punk show where I saw them live. They are a young band formed in 2016 in the capital city of Chile, Santiago, and have been very active since, with many shows and many demos prior to their debut LP, Intruder of Reality.

This mix of heavy crossover punk sounds real tight. You get that immediately from the way the instruments fit together in the tracks and how the songs flow one after one. But not too tight: it has movement, it doesn’t feel stuck or repetitive. It has a flaming energy that vividly represents the mood of current times (post-social outburst in Chile, post-Covid, post-national plebiscite, and on and on), with songs full of a desperate, tense and moody grip, despite it taking most of its inspiration from mid 80’s thrash metal and hardcore.  Maybe because there’s some sentiment that, for better or for worse, never abandons us.

It has that classic Hirax and Excel sound, of course, with distorted guitars, resonating drums, a rumbling and clear bass, chorused, vibrant vocals and an echoing ambience that wraps it all up firmly. They do it pretty well. Insecurity mixes melodic passages with fast, rattling beats, and an overall heavy, savage, yet pristine way of doing things. Most of the tracks in here are fairly long, but they manage to get your attention with their crafty composition filled with dynamic changes and exciting rhythms. The last track, sharing its name with the band, serves as a perfect example. From the melodic, melancholic melodies on the intro, to the heavy thrash riffs made of pure speed that follow, the changes in the chorus, the guitar leads, the way the voices integrate, it represents all what this whole album is about.

But, you know, I can keep all of those words to myself. I could go on and on about technical stuff (one of the strongest points in the LP, actually), but I’m just gonna be clear and honest with y’all: this album is simply fun as fuck. The opening riff to the title track  or the rushing drums at the start of “T. F. Y.”, for example, instantly makes me wanna break stuff like I did when I first got into this kind of music and that’s something I’ll always appreciate in what I listen to. And it has nothing to do with nostalgia, remembrance or any of that, is more like a primal need that fills your chest, impatient to break through and go out into the world. I know you know what I’m talking about. Your ears can tell you much more than my words can.

So, my conclusion is very clear: stop wasting your time reading and go give the album a listen. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Especially if you’re a punkhead that has never really been into metal, this one is the perfect listen for you. Trust me, just turn it up and play it loud.

Intruder of Reality is available in a limited edition of 100 tapes and an even more limited edition of 20 CDs. Grab one while you can! You can contact the band here: [email protected]
