Formed around 2016, Junta is a hardcore band currently based in New York City with roots deeply entrenched in regions historically ravaged by colonial oppression, imperialism, and capitalism. While not as prolific in touring and releasing music as other bands in the music scene who run their bands as businesses of sorts, Junta is driven by a deep-seated political conviction and a passionate desire to perform benefit gigs for a variety of social causes. Their aim is to agitate, educate, and incite direct action and community defense.

Their raw punk onslaught began with 2017’s gut-punch single Imminent War, followed by the searing ferocity of their Open Veins demo (with a nod to Eduardo Galeano’s book in the title) and the fierce anti-police diatribe of the Policia No me Jodas EP. Now they’re dropping the hatchet with “Mi Violencia,” the first blistering track from their forthcoming self-titled LP, set for release on California’s Sentient Ruin Laboratories in January 2024.

This twenty-minute album blends red-raw political hardcore punk with reworked versions of earlier demos and EPs, and new tracks calling for militant direct action against imperialism, genocide, capitalism, and social injustice everywhere. From the ongoing struggles against Cop City, to the escalating resistance and solidarity actions for Palestine.

The upcoming eleven-track album is a powerful statement of social upheaval and dissent, reflecting the band’s deep connection to marginalized and indigenous communities fragmented by segregation and injustice. It’s a raw and intense manifesto of struggle that blends hardcore punk aggression with the poetry of the dispossessed, embodying both idealism and stark realpolitik in their music.

DIY Conspiracy contacted Junta for an interview about their debut LP and the song premiere, but their singer N. refused to answer any questions about their music, stating that there are more important things than talking about punk.

If your platform actually listened to and internalized what our music and art is about, it would be far more sagacious to use this time to discuss real world issues that are happening right now, not punk rock music. Issues like the necessity of ending the fascist entity of Israel, which is actively manufacturing genocide in occupied Palestine as you read this. The Israeli fascism that exports technology, weapons, training, tactics across the world targeting Black, Indigenous, and any people white supremacist capitalism can profit in murdering and displacing. I’d suggest joining your local revolutionary organization, or try this—find your friends, find some time during the week, find an apparatus in your area that upholds the Israeli fascist project and engage in direct action to dismantle and shut it down. Dare to fight, educate your friends, family and neighbors, do it yourself, be creative and move swiftly.

Junta’s self-titled LP will be released on January 26, 2024 and is now available for pre-order from Sentient Ruin. Junta are also on Bandcamp and Instagram.
