Mavro Gala (Μαύρο Γάλα in Greek) has been an integral part of the boiling DIY music scene in Athens since its formation in 2015. Over the years, they’ve built a dedicated network through extensive touring throughout Greece and Europe, sharing stages with DIY bands and renowned acts like Unsane and Deaf Kids.

Their discography includes an EP, a split album, and three full-length releases. Recently Venerate Industries announced the signing of Mavro Gala for the release of their highly anticipated fourth album, Tenderness on October 27th.

Listening to Mavro Gala’s latest serving is a pulsating emotional journey through a concise yet impactful tracklist that’s both introspective and evocative. I feel Tenderness is a step forward for the band in terms of both songwriting and production, yet it manages to keep their own blend of post-hardcore and ’90s screamo. A heartfelt manifesto of the self…

Kicking off with “I Reach Out to You…”—a brief, yet intensely gripping instrumental piece that hits right in the feels.

“For my Wounds to be Tended” throws you headfirst into a haunting melody and gut-wrenching vocals. The raw, unfiltered emotion is so much in your face, it almost hurts.

First single “Sundays” comes next—a short, bittersweet memento of city life. Stripped down to its core, this track feels right on point with its pure and introspective lyrics.

Promised a Sunday to rest
Working double shifts to pay our rent
On the sidewalks we fell in love
On the sidewalks that now want us off

“To Share What Aches” delves deep into the pain we carry within, and Mavro Gala’s ability to channel this angst through their music is a beautiful thing.

“Interlude” is a delicate breather amidst the chaos, a moment to catch up and reflect before diving back into the emotional abyss with the second single “Repetition.” Don’t let the title fool you; this track is anything but mundane.

“Tried, Failed, Tried”—one of the album’s longer cuts—immerses in its storytelling prowess—a tale of battles fought, resilience and, in a way, the twisted determination to keep moving. One of most emotionally relatable and touching tracks for me lyrically.

The closer “Our Strength in Numbers” serves as a perfect ending to an album that beautifully balances sorrow and solace.

Tenderness, Mavro Gala’s latest offering, is a testament to their ability to evoke deep emotions and connect with the listener on a profound and intimate level. The album may be relatively short in duration, but the impact is surely lasting. I found myself listening to it almost obsessively in the past few days since it came out.

I can already tell this is one of those albums that slowly seep through the cracks, then bloom and evolve ever so slightly with each listen.

Following the release, Mavro Gala will be touring in November, starting this week. They will play at Fabrika Avtonomia here in Sofia this Friday. Don’t miss them when they come to your city!
