Leaving no room for subtlety or pretense, Power Alone’s latest offering, the cassette and digital Nothingness EP, crashes into the hardcore scene like a raging storm. Released unexpectedly on the last day of June 2023, this California vegan straight edge band with former members of Gather delivers a whirlwind of sheer power and intensity in just four explosive tracks.
Much like their full-length Rather Be Alone (Indecision Records, 2020), Nothingness unleashes a metallic hardcore frenzy that rivals a shark attack. Once again, Power Alone’s anti-authoritarian message resounds with unyielding determination. Fierce tracks like “Out For Themselves,” “Leader Seekers,” “Obsolete,” and “Cancer” tear through the speakers, delivering unadulterated rage with a raw, stripped-down approach.
Influenced by heavyweights such as Foundation, Morning Again, and Earth Crisis, Power Alone combine bone-shattering breakdowns, intense divebombs, and crushing metallic riffs to create a sonic assault that commands attention. With Eva Hall’s fierce vocals and vitriolic lyrics, the band takes aim at social inequality and injustice, leaving no stone unturned.
In a landscape where many modern bands focus on introspective themes, Power Alone waste no time in making an impact with a vision for a more just and emancipated world. Their straightforward message strikes deeply at the pillars of capitalism, religion, the police, and the entire oppressive system born out of an acceleratingly destructive industrial civilization. It’s a piercing combination of furious lyrics and mosh-inducing breakdowns that hits you right in the face.
With Nothingness, Power Alone captures the essence of untamed hardcore punk ferocity. This EP is a testament to the band’s unwavering commitment to their craft and their refusal to compromise their beliefs. Without a doubt one of my favorite hardcore EPs of the year.
