Finnish metalcore / melodic hardcore group Heathen Hearts sets to release No Light Left To Chase, a brand new release including four exceptional songs. Lauri (guitars, backing vocals) and Jere (guitars, backing vocals) were kind to break down the meanings of their songs exclusively for Thoughts Words Action.

“No light left to chase” presents to you a raw, aggressive and authentic piece of music poured straight from the heart. After the first EP, there was a desire to develop and expand the band’s existing musical borders set at the first release without losing the aggressive sound and frustration towards the world we live in. The root sound of the EP is based on hardcore and the overall screw has been tightened from the first release, but still there are a bit more melodies and a bit wider musical borders compared to the first release. Even though the EP has been named “No light left to chase”, there is still hope and light left to chase as it can be heard, perhaps not lyrics wise, but music wise.

The EP was recorded by ourselves, except the drums. Artwork was done and planned by the band, and there is a lot of thought put into the overall image of the band and the release. Even though this might not have been the easiest journey to finally have this ready, we are all very proud of it. We put a lot of thought into giving the physical formats some kind of speciality, and more insight for the physical copies buyers, so the booklet and insert includes foreword, lyrics and a little “Behind the song” story of each song. Also 12” Vinyl and Cassette format will include our first EP on the B-side as a special bonus. Cassette will be limited to 50 pcs which are all hand numbered.

Starve the Machine

This was the first one with “the Wound” that we started writing after the recordings of the first S/T EP. And first one to actually complete. Funny thing is that the whole song structure was composed in one evening and it started off with one of Lauri’s riffs, which we ended up taking away from the final version. So arrangement wise, the song was very simple to get together, though the riffs and melodies have evolved a bit from the original version. Not much but just enough. – Jere

The feedback in the start that leads to the main riff was really fun to make. Me and Jere were full of pure joy when we were recording it. We had all of the pedals on my pedalboard turned on and maybe a couple extra ones also. And as a guitar player, what is more fun than to make a lot of pure noise since usually it annoys everyone but yourself, hah. This is a song that makes you wanna mosh your head from start to finish, it has a good beat for it too! – Lauri

Ignite

First version of the song was written around the same time as we wrote the songs for the first EP, and has been played live several times starting from the first show. The original version felt a bit too rushed or weird somehow, and the final version was completed in our demo sessions a couple of weeks before the actual recordings. All in all, the song is very much fist in the face with a simple arrangement and shows a more traditional harcore side of our sound. The gang shouts and choirs work very well, special thanks to my dudes Toni, Matti & Tero. – Jere

I think that this song might be quite surprising to a lot of listeners. It comes straight on to your face from the start with the HM-2 screaming like hell. And after the C section you would expect another chorus if you think of a traditional song structure but it never arrives. Instead you get this lovely “boy” choir on top of Antti’s long scream. Very cool way to start and end a song in my opinion. – Lauri

Doombreather

Ahh, Doombreather. The song was very hard to arrange, but finally in the demo sessions we got it working. There was a thought to throw it completely to the archive, but I think it might have been Ville or Juhana who really wanted to get that song working and finally we got it. For sure the most violent song on the EP, and gotta be happy with the outcome. – Jere

I just love the aggression in this song. The little blast beat parts every here and there come right at your face. This was quite a hard song to arrange but in the end we got it just right. Like the way the chorus sits in the middle of all the aggressive riffing and blasting sounds just right. – Lauri

The Wound

The Wound, probably musically the most diverse song we have done, and somewhat shows all kinds of aspects of our personal influences. It is still kind of pressed to some kind of hardcore mold, but still it has elements from different kinds of genres. I’m personally very happy with the outcome, and the gang shouts just adds the extra push to the 2nd verse and chorus. – Jere

This song has evolved quite a lot during its lifetime. I sent the first demo to Jere and it went through quite the makeover to the better. We had a couple dual-guitar-nights where we made some spontaneous decisions to add a lot of epicness to the song. Especially to the ending with all the blast beats and tremolo guitars. I remember that we had an idea of modulation and everyone had a little doubt about it, but when we played it in our rehearsal space for the first time everyone had shivers. – Lauri

Heathen Hearts is a metal / hardcore band from Kotka, Finland.

Founded in summer 2021, the band consists of experienced musicians with widely different backgrounds who found common ground in what they call ”northern hardcore”.

The music is a mix of metal and hardcore with melodic guitars. The lyrics describe the world we live in from a darker perspective. And the atmosphere could be described best as an outburst of fury, aggression and frustration.

Music follows no strict genre limitations and the focus has been on making quality songs with efficient arrangements.

Self titled debut EP was released in May 2022 accompanied by two music videos ”Ichor” and ”World of Ash”. Both music videos have been published on one of the genre’s most followed YouTube channels – Hardcore Worldwide among other channels.

After the first release the band has been featured on multiple publications in Finland as well as abroad such as Rock Hard (Italy) and Metalized (Denmark).

The aim is to gradually make the band more and more known and build ground and following for future releases.

Feedback from the public has been overwhelmingly positive and live shows have gathered a good number of audience on every show. One of the most positive results of 2022 was when the band finished 2nd out of 160 bands in a national metal band competition organized by Saarihelvetti and Dark River metal festivals.

Second EP release ”No light left to chase” is going to be released in late spring/early summer 2023 accompanied by a music video from the song ”Starve the machine” which will be out during spring.

There are plans to also release a separate single later this year. Composing the first whole album is on its way.

The band currently search for labels, booking agencies and associates to help spread our music across the world.
