Ye.stem is a newly formed Polish hardcore punk band featuring scene veterans Max, Smok and Rolf from cult anarcho-punk band Post Regiment and vocalist Dymitr, who has also played in many Polish DIY punk bands. This is their first full-length album after an EP in 2021 and it was released on Valentine’s Day in 2023. There’s a vinyl release on Sanctus Propaganda, a digipack CD on Hasiok Records and a self-released CD.

The sound is very fresh and powerful, with lyrics that deal with a variety of historical and political issues, written very eloquently, educating the listener with valuable information about the history of Polish class struggle, uprisings and other tales of revolutionary angst—all presented very maturely.

Poignant depictions of oppression, violence and mental slavery, mockery of chauvinism and nationalism with some humor here and there, poetic expressions of the band’s libertarian philosophy—this album has it all. It’s catchy and energetic, yet compact and full. Vicious and angry, yet with a coherent and mature outlook on a wide range of social issues.

All this energy is perfectly encapsulated by the well-crafted music with catchy hardcore riffs, a very interesting melodic vocal approach and really captivating bass lines. Their music is made even more varied and engaging by guest appearances by fellow scene veterans Sanctus Wojtek, Amoniak and Herne in the epic track “Warto słuchać mądrego”, as well as Maria Kurowska in “Dżewa (requiem dla puszczy)”. Since almost all the lyrics are written by the band (some of their friends and guest musicians on the album also had a hand in some of the tracks) in the poetic Polish language, translations are also provided by Marta Fajans, SchizMaciek and Zuzanna Gralewicz.

All in all, a very innovative and educational band; given the experience and talent of its members, we can expect a lot of cool stuff from them in the future. If you share our opinion about their music and values, you can support them via their official Bandcamp page or buying the album at Sanctus Propaganda or Hasiok Records.
